What is 'online' interpreting or VRS?

To answer a question that is asked a lot in the Deaf community.....


.....what is 'online' interpreting, VRS, video relay interpreting, video interpreting?


This is a service for Deaf and hearing people to communicate via an interpreter on a video/PC screen rather than in person.


terptree work with SignTranslate to offer online webcam interpreting services for those who can't access a BSL interpreter face-to-face.





Using online interpreting mean that short one to one appointments and last minute bookings can be covered more easily than if you tried to find an available BSL Interpreter.


The appointment should not last more than 30 minutes.  If the interpreter is needed for longer than this, breaks should be negotiated.  


Only Registered Sign Language Interpreters (RSLI) provide online interpreter due to the high level of skills needed to translate BSL from video.

Under Part 3 of the Disability Discrimination Act, October 1999; service providers are required to make, and meet the costs of reasonable adjustments to meet the needs of disabled people. 
Online interpreting is an example of a reasonable adjustment.


The service is charged per minute on a pay-as-you-go basis and the cost is covered by the service provider.


All you need to access the service is:


- PC/Laptop
- Web Browser (Internet Explorer)
- A broadband internet connection
- A webcam

Thank you for your comment Chris, yes we agree that online interpreting is not the solution for all interpreting needs.

However, online interpreting is a fantastic solution for those last minute appointments that you are unable to find an interpreter for.

It is important to stress that this is not the alternative to booking a face-to-face interpreter, but a complimentary service that should support the Deaf community in situations where there is no one available.
